Stop by either South Chesterfield or Moseley and let our Techs teach you the Penny Test today.
Tire Tread is your grip on the road. Treads come in all shapes and patterns to give you the best traction wherever you choose to drive. Tread also effects your vehicle’s performance and fuel economy.
Your tire tread can wear down for several reasons:
- worn shocks & struts
- improperly inflated tires
- unbalanced tires
- alignment problems
- general use (mileage)
Worn tire treads put you at risk:
- hydroplaning in wet weather
- tire puncture or damage
- longer braking distance
Check your treads with the Penny Test…
Just take a penny and, with Lincoln’s head upside down, put it between the tread blocks of the tire. If you are not able to see the top of Lincoln’s head – if his head is “buried” between the tread blocks – then you still have more than 2/32 of an inch of tread remaining. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, it’s time to go tire shopping because the tread is worn down to or beyond 2/32 of an inch.
At 2/32 of an inch you still have adequate treads for normal driving conditions but you may be at increased risk for slipping and hydroplaning in wet weather. If you have any doubts or see worn areas please come see one of our Techs, a tire expert who can tell you whether your tires treads are reliable or unsafe.
