What color is Antifreeze?

Do you know the color of your coolant? Most people think of antifreeze or coolant as green. For years many antifreeze/coolants were green in color but now many coolants come in a variety of colors. Antifreeze or coolant can be yellow, pink or red, blue, and  green. The color of the antifreeze/coolant is really based on the formula.

How do you choose the right coolant? Choosing the right formula is important to protect your engine. Your owner’s manual will tell you the manufacturers recommended formula and brand. You don’t have to use the manufacturer recommended brand to protect your engine but you do need to keep the same formula. Your local repair shop can give you options and recommendations based on your vehicle make, model and mileage. An older engine may require a different formula to protect against heat.

How often should you change coolant? All antifreeze or coolant does need to be changed, Its generally recommended a complete drain of old coolant and new coolant added, should be done every 60 months or 5 years. Throughout those 5 years or life of your vehicle you should have regular fluid checks and cooling system service every 30,000 miles to maintain your cooling system.

 What should I do if my engine overheats? If your dash board shows your engine is over heating pull over immediately. If you continue to drive with an over heated engine you do a great deal of costly damage. If you see steam or smoke coming from your engine do not lift the hood; extreme heat, steam, and possibly chemicals could spray on you causing serious injury.
