Over time, batteries may develop corrosion around their ports, causing bad connections which slow down your engine starts and shorten battery life.
The white powder looking substance is corrosion which has formed on the battery terminals. The corrosion is a reaction from gases leaking acid within the battery.
Most corrosion can be cleaned off which solves connection problems and rejuvenates the battery. However, if the leak is too great a new battery may be needed. Because vehicle batteries contain acid, service should be handled by trained professionals who know how to properly handle batteries.
