Complete Guide to Virginia Vehicle Safety Inspections

Your Complete Guide to Virginia Vehicle Safety Inspections

If you own a vehicle in Virginia, staying current with your state safety inspection isn't just a legal requirement—it's essential for keeping you and your family safe on the road. At Titan Auto & Tire, with locations in Moseley, North Chesterfield, and South Chesterfield, we want to help you understand everything you need to know about Virginia's vehicle inspection requirements.

Understanding What's Required for Virginia's Vehicle Safety Inspections

Virginia law requires that most vehicles registered in the Commonwealth undergo an annual safety inspection. This comprehensive evaluation ensures your vehicle meets state safety standards and is mechanically sound for highway operation.

When Do You Need Vehicle Safety Inspections?

New Vehicle Purchases in Virginia: New vehicles purchased in Virginia that have been inspected in accordance with an inspection requirement of the manufacturer or distributor are not required to undergo the initial annual safety inspection. However, these vehicles must be reinspected within twelve months of the month of the first inspection or purchase and at least once every twelve months thereafter, and display a valid inspection decal.

Out-of-State Vehicle Purchases: If a vehicle is purchased out-of-state and then registered in Virginia, it must be inspected once it is registered in this state. There is no grace period. The Virginia State Police recommends having the safety inspection performed before registering the vehicle in Virginia. Once you have registered a vehicle with the Department of Motor Vehicles in the state of Virginia, it must be inspected immediately.

Out-of-State Vehicles: You may have a safety inspection performed on your vehicle regardless of what state it is registered in.

What Gets Inspected?

According to the Virginia State Police, the Vehicle Safety inspection covers critical safety systems. Our certified inspectors examine:

  • Braking System: Worn, damaged, or missing parts, worn, contaminated, or defective linings or drums, leakage in the system, and proper fluid level, worn, contaminated, or defective disc pads or disc rotors
  • Steering and Suspension: Broken or missing parts, proper adjustment, standard factory equipment, or equivalent
  • Lights and Signals: Approved type, aim, and output, condition of lamps, lenses, wiring, and switch, high beam indicator
  • Turn Signals: Approved type, proper bulbs, and condition of lenses, wiring, and switch
  • Windshield and Windows: Condition of glass, operation of left front door glass, wipers, and defrosters
  • Tires and Wheels: Tread depth, condition, and proper mounting
  • Exhaust System: Exhaust line: manifold, gaskets, pipes, mufflers, connections, etc. Leakage of gases at any point from the engine to the point discharged from the system
  • Horn: Operating condition
  • Hood Latch: Operating condition of the hood latch
  • Emissions Systems: Presence of emissions system; evidence that any essential parts have been removed, rendered inoperative, or disconnected
  • Airbag Systems: Any part of the airbag system has been removed from the vehicle, or if the airbag indicator fails to light or stays on continuously
  • Doors: Handle or opening device which will permit the opening of the door from the outside and inside of the vehicle, latching system which will hold the door in its proper closed position
  • Fuel System: Any part that is not securely fastened, liquid fuel leakage, or fuel tank filler cap
  • Body and Floor: Holes which allow exhaust gases to enter the occupant compartment, conditions which create a hazard to the occupants

Windshield Tinting Regulations

Sun shading material on the windshield displaying words, lettering, numbers, or pictures that do not extend below the AS-1 line is permitted. In the absence of an AS-1 line, sun shading material on the windshield displaying words, lettering, numbers, or pictures cannot extend more than three inches downward from the top of the windshield, unless authorized by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and indicated on the vehicle registration.

Windshield Crack Requirements

According to the Virginia Official Safety Inspection Manual, windshields will be rejected if:

  • There is a pit, chip, or star crack larger than 1½ inches in diameter at any location in the windshield above the 3-inch line at the bottom
  • At any location in the windshield above the 3-inch line at the bottom, there is more than one crack from the same point if at least one of the cracks is more than 1½ inches in length
  • There is any crack that weakens the windshield so that one piece may be moved in relation to the other

What Happens If Your Vehicle Doesn't Pass?

All defects must be corrected, and the vehicle reinspected within 15 days. The driver may be subject to receiving a traffic summons for any defect still present when the vehicle is operated on the highway.

At Titan Auto & Tire, we can perform the necessary repairs to bring your vehicle into compliance and then complete the reinspection—all in one convenient visit.

Special Situations and Extensions

College Students and Military Personnel

There are no extensions. However, the Virginia Code provides some flexibility:

If your vehicle's inspection sticker is not current, and you drive back into Virginia, 46.2-1158.01, of the Code of Virginia, provides that you are not required to have your vehicle(s) reinspected until you return to your residence or place of business in Virginia.

Motor vehicles owned and operated by persons on active duty with the United States Armed Forces, who are Virginia residents stationed outside of Virginia at the time the inspection expires, may operate such vehicle(s) on the highway of the Commonwealth while on leave, provided such vehicle(s) display a valid inspection sticker issued by another state.

Antique Vehicles

For a vehicle to be defined as "antique," it must be 25 years old or older. If the vehicle is registered as an antique through the Department of Motor Vehicles, it is exempt from state inspection.

When Does Your Inspection Expire?

The sticker expires on the last day of the month, regardless of whether it is a weekday (Monday-Friday) or weekend (Saturday-Sunday). No documents will be mailed to remind you that the inspection is due.
